INTIMACY

 

 

 

One of the first lessons a boy must learn is to control the expression of his emotions. A man must stop himself from crying, not be too affectionate in public, be dominant and sometimes even scornful. In the end, he must be strong so that he does not resemble the other, the one supposed to be fragile and the object of derision and disdain.

 

The intimate relationship is the space where we can escape from these rigid conventions. When we are not observed and we feel comfortable, our vulnerabilities surface. We open ourselves to the person we trust, free from affective shyness and body modesty. Thus, an alternative to traditional masculinity emerges. It is not only displayed in the anatomy of the people in the portraits -who look at the spectator’s eyes without pretence- but also in my own point of view as a photographer who is not a mere voyeur but an active participant in this  intimacy.
